If you pull the rope, the spool moves. But why does it sometimes roll toward you, sometimes away from you?

• Where does the spool roll, when you hold the rope horizontally?
• Where does the spool roll, when you hold the rope vertically? 
• Try pulling from different angles. At what angle does the behaviour of the spool change? 
• What happens, when you pull hard on the rope at this angle? 
• What do you think, is this angle the same no matter what spool?
