Instructions:
Take the Mirror ears, hold them to your ears and walk through the room.
What can you hear?
- Stand in the room. What do you hear?
- What do you hear when you hold your ear to the openings in the sphere?
- Do all spheres sound the same?
- What do you hear if you cup your hand over the ear?
The ‘noise’ in spherical hollow bodies is called ‘Helmholtz resonance,’ named after Hermann von Helmholtz (1821–1894), one of the most famous and versatile scientists of his time. Since physics was considered a ‘useless art’ in his youth, Helmholtz initially studied medicine, until his interest in the connections between the physical nature of things and their perception by the sensory organs finally led him to become a professor of physics.
